The Huichol Indians

Along the borders of the states of Jalisco and Nayarit, Mexico, in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, live an indigenous tribe of unique and magical people: the Huichols. Because of the extreme remoteness of the territory, the Huichols were not conquered by the Spanish invaders nor greatly changed by Mexican culture. Therefore, they live today very much as they did centuries ago and are considered by manay anthropologiests to be an invalluable "window" into the ancient past of the Americas. Often the Huichol are referred to as "magical" in part because of the mystical qualitiy of their helaing poweres. The Huichol today number about 10,000.

The Psychedelic Art of the Huichol Indians

Let me share with you an article by Dr. Eugene Garfield that I've saved for many years, which is an excellent description and explanation of the Huichol's relationship with natural hallucinogenics and their art. Fortunately, the University of Pennsylvania has scanned the pre-Internet journal Essays of an Information Scientist and made them available online as PDF documents. This article is from Vol. 4, p. 348-350, 1979-1980; Current #52, p5-7, December 24-31, 1979.
