Francisco Loza
Francisco Loza, originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, creates “Arte de Estambre” (Yarn Art) by working on a wood surface using a combination of waxes as an adhesive base on which he intricately weaves together thread‑by‑thread yarns of brilliant colors. Francisco is a self‑taught artist who learned his technique by working with Huichol artisans who live in the Sierra Madre mountains of Nayarit and Jalisco in central Mexico.

Francisco's artwork reflects the religious ceremonies of Huichol communities which are led by shamans, or Marakames. His art captures the cultural essence and the unique symbols of Huichol traditions which is based on Francisco’s first‑hand knowledge of living and working with Huichol artisans for over fifteen years. Francisco interprets his visions of Huichol sacred traditions due to his own experiences of being invited to participate in their ceremonies and to live in the Huichol communities.

Francisco's art celebrates other Mexican traditions such as daily life in small pueblos, beaches, markets (tianguis), and important holidays such as Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos). Francisco also creates artwork which illustrates the people and customs of the Caribbean and Africa, and most recently, he has produced a new series which focuses on modern‑day jazz musicians.

Francisco has exhibited his “Arte en Estambre” work in galleries, universities, and museums in Mexico and in the United States. He has also led numerous demonstrations and workshops to adolescents, artists and senior citizens of both countries.  In addition to his own art activities, Francisco managed an art gallery in San Francisco, Nayarit (about 50 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta) where he exhibited his art along with Huichol artisans. Currently, he divides his time between his studio‑gallery in Tepic, Nayarit and Mexico City.
